Spudtember 16th

Friday update on my month-long potato diet experience.

Everything is going great, I derived probably 95% of my calories the past couple days/weeks from potatoes. The odd dipping sauce or foraged tomato were my only deviations. I haven't weighed in a couple days, but I assume the weight is slowly going down still.

The amazing thing...it's not that bad.

The first week was the worst, continually lamenting the loss of tasty foods. But I find now that oven-baked fries, hash browns, and mashed potatoes and re-fried mash all make exceptional meals and I look forward to each meal now. I'm finding myself eating to fullness and not wanting other things at all.

I've jogged two miles every night this week except one when it was raining, doing a daily pull-up/push-up routine, and I walk probably 3 miles a day. No slow down in any of this.

If anyone has been on the fence about the potato hack, or wanting to try a longer stretch, go for it!  I have a feeling that after 30 days, my 3-5 day normal hack will be a cinch!

Lesson for the week.

If you do any length of potato hacking, find 3 or 4 ways of making potatoes, simply, that you enjoy. For me, I need a bit of crispiness and salt...those two factors really make a big difference for me.

Later!
Tim

  1. Fabulous, Tim! I'm finding red potatoes are actually sweet, even raw - and that's hackless. Looking forward to more posts -

  2. Tim, is the exercise part of your normal routine when you are not doing the "hack"?

    1. Yes, just doing my normal routine. I jog outside every year from April - Sep, and then on a treadmill when the road is in snow and ice. I'm really quite surprised how much energy I have.

  3. I'm still thinking a potato retreat in Alaska sounds like a great idea. Better yet, we could all come and spend the summer with you for an even longer potato hack!

    Way to go, Tim!

  4. In your original potato hacks you had always mentioned to not workout or at least to take it easier. I never did (back off) and now you know why. PLenty of protein and other good stuff in taters, plus energy levels often increase

    1. Yep! No need to lay off, I see that now. On a 3-5 day hack, it's nice to use it in conjunction with a de-load week, and you probably would not want to begin a rigorous lifting/CrossFit program, but I am quite pleased with how I feel and what I can do after only potatoes for two weeks now.

  5. Do you ever wonder why we like crispy things so much? What purpose did that serve us? Insects?

    1. That's a good question. Maybe in crispification, foods develop more intense flavour?

    2. I imagine anything cooked may have come out crispy when down over open fire?

    3. Aren't many fruits and vegetables crispy?

    4. I think it's just because crispy potatoes have less water and therefore more calories, which makes our brains happy.

  6. I'm going to try 3 days of steel cut oatmeal at lunch and boiled potatoes with only salt for dinner, a fast from fats.
