Upcoming Blog Posts

Just wanted to give quick a lead-in to Monday's blog, "Probiotics and Antibiotics."

I have some antibiotic posts that are set to pop up every Monday morning for the next 10 weeks.  I figured it was way too much for one blog, but 10 seemed to fit.  I've been interested in this whole 'antibiotic resistance' thing for a long time and did quite a bit of research on it.  I hope you get something out of it.

Vinegar Magic

Yesterday I got an out-of-the-blue email from one of my old lurker buddies asking about 'wild fruit vinegars.' Christine, aka, WildCucumber, told me she's been making vinegar in her kitchen from fruit she gets around her home in Quebec.  This made me remember a paper I had recently bookmarked about the health properties of vinegar, but hadn't gotten around to reading.

I clicked on the vinegar paper and scrolled down, wow.  Vinegar is amazing stuff!

Now I know.

Your Turn

Hi, Everyone!

I started this blog as a place to keep my story straight.  I see from the traffic report that about 700 people a day are now reading and a hundred or so have signed up for the email alerts.  I'm amazed.  I'm just not sure how many of these 'hits' are real people and how many are just spam-bots or web-crawlers searching for my bank account numbers or trying to get personal information for marketers.  I have a feeling the real number is around 100-150 people a day looking, but even that number amazes me.  I would like to ask that every 'real person' reading this leave a comment, even if it is just to say 'hi'.

Does RS Cause Colon Cancer? YES!!! But that's OK...

HOORAY!!!!!

This is the last installment of about 75 articles on resistant starch and potato starch that were spawned from my incessant pimping of a beautiful white powder.  I hope that if you've been following along you have come to the realization that potato starch as an RS supplement is here to stay.  Tomorrow, I will put up a blog for you guys to tell me what you want to read about, with comments on.  Thanks for your interest!

Here's a great blog from Mark Sisson.  A study recently came out that's making headlines like, "Low Carb Diet Prevents Colon Cancer!" The trouble is, there is a major caveat to the story...I'll let Mark explain.  - Tim

Dear Mark: Does Resistant Starch Cause Colon Cancer?

greenbananasFor today’s edition of Dear Mark, I’m handling just one question. I originally planned to answer more reader questions, but it turned into a complex answer that really made me dig deeper into something – butyric acid – I’d assumed was completely benign. I still do, mind you, for the most part. The position has just become more nuanced. Anyway, the question is from a reader who’s just seen a study that seems to implicate butyric acid, the primary short chain fatty acid that resistant starch-eating gut bacteria produce, in colon cancer. Was my ringing endorsement of resistant starch a mistake after all?

Dr. Amy Nett Discusses RS on Chris Kresser's blog!

I was so surprised to see this!  A really well-written piece on RS, all of the facts were right and she even mentioned me.  Of course I just had to jump in and help with the comments.  I hope I didn't steal their thunder, but I tried to leave the hard, medical questions to the experts.  Some very good comments, go check them out.  I think what amazed me more was the depth of the discussion.  This shows me that people are taking gut health serious and looking at RS as a tool to achieve gut health and exploring the alternatives.

Also some great comments by my partners in crime:  Duck Dodgers, PaleoPhil, and Gemma!

How Resistant Starch Will Help to Make You Healthier and Thinner

I asked Dr. Amy Nett, MD, to contribute this guest post. She recently joined my private practice and will be working with me in the clinic.  Amy initially completed her medical training in radiology at Stanford University Hospital, but wanted to work more directly with patients, helping them to prevent and reverse chronic disease and truly transform their health.  Combined with her passion for nutrition she decided to pursue a career in functional medicine, and is excited to have the opportunity to work more closely with patients in achieving their goals and realizing their best potential.  You’ll be hearing more from Amy in the future!

My Guts, by Me!

Here is a guest-blog I did at FTA on my American Gut results.  I just love the American Gut Project and I think they are breaking new ground.  Sure, there are problems, but I think everyone should spend the $99 for a test.  Just last week, I sent in a follow-up American Gut test kit and also a UBiome test on the exact same piece of dookie...will be fun to compare them side-by-side.  -Tim

Resistant Starch: American Gut Project Real Results And Comparison (Very Big News)

To catch up, perhaps a dozen or more posts, thousands of comments from hundreds of people around the world self experimenting. No, you do not have to "wait for the 'science,'" because self experimentation is science. And it's arguably the best because since it's self, that means it applies to you and only you. You get to do this and see for yourself.
OK, today, a rather sizable and meaty post . It's a guest post by "Tatertot Tim"; and as everyone knows, the prime mover in the whole resistant starch awareness finally making its way into Paleo, Primal, Perfect Health Diet, and low carb circles. This is what we have all been waiting for. How does the gut flora of a habitual resistant starch consumer compare to that of a SAD eater, or, even an LC eater?

Resistant Starch and Oranges

There’s been a lot of discussion about Resistant Starch (RS) in the Paleo world lately, most of which has taken place over at Free the Animal. I haven’t read all of the posts, threads, and comments relating to this topic, but I’ve read enough to pique my interest. RS is basically the isolated starch from potatoes and other foods that is resistant to digestion in the body – it behaves in the body like a fiber rather than a typical starch.

Bulletproof Forum on RS Use

Dave Asprey's people discussing RS and potato starch!  -Tim

Bulletproof Exec Forum

    Hi all,

    I've just ordered all of my supplements to try the Bulletproof Rapid Fat Loss Protocol: http://www.bulletpro...-loss-protocol/

    I've been supplementing resistant starch using 4 TBSP of Bob's Red Mill potato starch daily for about 1-2 months now and I really love the effects I've been getting with it (better sleep, better moods, etc), If you're not familiar with resistant starch, you can read about it here: http://freetheanimal...er-newbies.html
    What I want to know is would it be safe to continue supplementing resistant starch during the RFLP? Would it interfere with any of the processes that are contributing to the weight loss in any way? I wouldn't think that it would, as it isn't digested by "you," just your gut flora.

    Where I Started

    Before doing the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol (AIP), I spent 6 months on the GAPS Diet. It’s very similar to regular paleo with one major difference: it eliminates high starch vegetables, based on the belief that they are difficult to digest and end up feeding harmful bacteria in the large intestine.

    I’ve been reading about the benefits of resistant starch from several sources, here, here, and here. It’s been credited with helping improve gut flora, improving insulin sensitivity, reducing triglycerides, and reducing the risk of colon cancer. Increased butyrate production is the scientific explanation (description here, for those interested in knowing the “why”)> These are good things.

    What Is Resistant Starch?

    Resistant starch is a starch that isn’t broken down and absorbed during the digestion process. Instead it's turned into short-chain fatty acids by intestinal bacteria, feeding the friendly bacteria in the gut.

    Human Breast Milk and RS

    Here's another guest-post I did at FTA...again, lots of comments at the link. -Tim

    The Importance of Human Breast Milk for Gut Microbiome Development

    Here's a little guest post from Tim "Tatertot" Steele.
    ~~~
    When you start looking at RS and gut bugs, here's a connection I recently came across that I will be exploring further for merit.
    In human breast milk, there are hundreds of compounds called Humans Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOS). There are also hundreds of bacterial strains present in breast milk, presumably through the entero-mammary pathway. This combination of pre and probiotics results in rapid structure of the newborn's gut to favor almost exclusively probiotic strains of bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacterias.
    We often hear about the importance of probiotics, and rightfully so. They can help improve our digestion, elimination, immune system, and even the look of our skin!
    Probiotics are live bacteria and/or yeast that live inside our body. We bring them into our systems via foods, supplements, and soil. This is the good gut flora that everyone is after. But like any living organism, probiotics need to be nourished and supported, which is where prebiotics come in.
    Pill Scout Scouts Out RS
    One of the many, many random articles on RS you will find searching around the internets!  - Tim
    An introdution to resistant starches
    Resistant starches are probably one of the most overlooked and misunderstood nutrients of our time, next to Iodine and Vitamin D. Two weeks prior to this post, I had no clue what they were myself.
    It’s very likely that you aren’t getting very many resistant starches in your diet. The “Standard American Diet” has almost none due to processing and refinement of certain foods. Even paleo dieters may overlook these, as it’s easier to remember “meat = good, seeds = bad”
    Properly preparing black beans for resistant starch and to ease digestion is very simple. It just requires a bit of planning ahead. I’ve found soaked black beans are tolerated by my body very well. I had been avoiding all legumes for the past four years because they irritated my gut and made my joints hurt. A 24 to 48 hour soak eliminates those problems.
    Mark Sisson on RS and Gluten-free Diets
    I love Mark, he is always spot-on when it comes to RS and diet advice.  Lots of my ideas in this section of the article!  Love seeing them.  -Tim
    The “Dangers” of Going Gluten-Free
    “Gluten-free diets decrease levels of good gut bacteria and increase levels of bad gut bacteria.”
    A while back, this study made the rounds. Anyone who wanted to ridicule people on elective gluten-free diets could now do it with a study under their belt. Never mind the fact that they rarely actually read the full study. Never mind the fact that they didn’t understand the significance of a shift in gut microbiota composition. They just knew that it was “bad”, that it was proof we gluten-abstainers were foolish and wrong. But the actual study paints a slightly different picture. Actually, a phrase embedded in the quote in the abstract says it all. Healthy gut bacteria decreased and unhealthy bacteria increased parallel to reductions in the intake of polysaccharides after following the GFD.
    I Eat Meat RS Rice Part 3
    Resistant Starch in Parboiled Rice
    increase resistant starch in parboiled rice6
    Parboiled Rice is a good source of resistant starch (RS) and your preparation method can increase the content. I have been trying to increase resistant starch foods in my diet while still supplementing with Bob’s Red Mill Potato Starch. I really am grateful for Richard and Tim sharing all the information about resistant starch via Free the Animal. I really believe this was the the missing element in my paleo style diet, not just a safe carb, but an essential carbohydrate. Essential in the maintenance of a healthy gut, feeding those bacteria that digest your food and provide much of your immune system.
